Koznik

Koznik is a medieval fortress on the slopes of Zeljin Mountain near Aleksandrovac in Serbia. The ruins include three large octagonal towers, several smaller towers, and fortification walls situated at about 920 meters elevation.

Prince Lazar built the castle in the 14th century as a defensive fortress to control the Rasina River Valley and the Zupa region. The structure served a strategic role in protecting these important areas.

The fortress hosts the annual 'Koznik - Town of Knights' event each August, featuring medieval competitions, traditional food, and crafts demonstrations. Visitors experience living traditions that reflect Serbian heritage during this time.

Visitors reach the fortress through hiking trails from Koznica village, with the ascent taking about 45 minutes. The terrain is hilly and requires proper footwear and plenty of water, especially on warmer days.

The fortress contains a sophisticated water system with a large cistern and four wells that reach deep underground reserves. This system allowed inhabitants to survive long sieges without needing external water sources.
