Muzeum Słońca w Nowosybirsku, Solar artifacts museum in Akademgorodok district, Novosibirsk, Russia
Sonnenmuseum is an art museum in the Akademgorodok district of Novosibirsk, dedicated entirely to the sun as a subject. It displays wooden carvings, archaeological finds, and contemporary artworks that all represent the sun in one way or another.
The museum grew out of a wood carving club called Sunny, founded in 1992 by Valery Lipenkov at the Institute of Nuclear Physics. As the collection of sun-related objects grew, the club gradually turned into a public museum.
The collection brings together sun images from many different cultures and time periods, ranging from ancient talismans to modern art objects. Visitors can see side by side how people across the world have chosen to represent the sun in very different ways.
The museum is on Ivanov Street 11a in Akademgorodok and can be reached by public transport. Guided tours are available, so it is worth checking opening hours before you go.
The Sonnenmuseum is considered the only museum in the world devoted entirely to the sun as a collecting theme. Its name is written in German even though it is located in Russia, which reflects an international ambition from the very start.
