Kamenny Island Theatre, Classical theatre on Kamenny Island, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Kamenny Island Theatre is a wooden building in the classical style, set on Kamenny Island in Saint Petersburg, resting on a limestone base with eight Corinthian columns across its main facade. A triangular pediment crowns the entrance, giving the structure a balanced and measured appearance.
The building was put up in 1826 by architect Smaragd Shustov in the space of forty days. It is the only wooden theatre from that era still standing in Saint Petersburg.
The building serves as a second stage for the Bolshoi Drama Theater, hosting performances in a close setting. The hall is so compact that audiences can follow every expression on the performers' faces from almost any seat.
The theatre is on Kamenny Island and can be found at Old Theatre Square 13, which makes it easy to locate on foot. The island itself is calm and worth exploring before or after a visit.
During renovations, workers dug out underground space beneath the building without touching the wooden structure above. This was a real challenge given that the ground in this part of the island is marshy and soft.
