Kamenny Island Theatre, Classical theatre on Kamenny Island, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Kamenny Island Theatre is a wooden building in classical style with a rectangular footprint that rests on a limestone base and features eight Corinthian columns across its main facade. A triangular pediment crowns the front entrance and emphasizes the balanced design of the structure.
The building was constructed in 1826 by architect Smaragd Shustov and completed in just forty days. It remains the last wooden theatre still standing in Saint Petersburg.
The venue functions as a second stage for the Bolshoi Drama Theater, hosting performances in a close setting with around 310 seats. Visitors experience a different kind of theater here, where performers and audience members are near enough to notice subtle expressions and movements.
The theatre sits at Old Theatre Square 13 and is straightforward to locate with this address. Following extensive renovations between 2005 and 2012, the building now includes modern stage systems and facilities built into underground levels.
During renovations, builders created around 2800 square meters of underground space while keeping the wooden structure intact. This was a notable engineering challenge given the marshy ground that characterizes the area where the theatre stands.
