Gamla staden, Medieval district in Malmö, Sweden.
Gamla staden is a medieval district in Malmö centered on four interconnected squares linked by narrow cobblestone streets. The neighborhood is bordered by canals on three sides and enclosed by Slottsgatan street on the western edge.
The district originated around 1250 as a settlement near Flynderborg castle, with initial growth concentrated at the intersection of Norra Vallgatan and Hamngatan streets. This medieval foundation shaped the street layout that remains today.
Saint Peter's Church anchors the district's identity with its prominent tower visible from most streets, while traditional buildings frame the daily rhythm of locals gathering in squares. The shops and restaurants around these gathering spaces reflect how the neighborhood has become a meeting point for both residents and visitors.
The district is easy to explore on foot, with two shopping centers and numerous restaurants spread through the streets. The cobblestone areas can be slippery in wet weather, so sturdy shoes are recommended.
The western portion retains original medieval buildings, while the eastern side was completely rebuilt during the 1960s. Walking from one section to the other reveals a striking difference between authentic old structures and reconstructed replacements.
