National Gallery of Slovenia, Art museum in Ljubljana, Slovenia
The National Gallery of Slovenia is an art museum in Ljubljana housing around 600 works spanning different periods. The collection ranges from medieval religious art to 20th-century Slovenian paintings and includes works by European artists.
The museum was founded in 1918 and was first housed in Kresija Palace. In 1926 it moved to Narodni dom palace, where it became a state institution in 1946.
The permanent collection showcases artists from Slovenia and Southern Europe whose work reflects how people saw their world. Walking through the rooms, you notice how painters like Ivana Kobilca and Ivan Grohar captured their surroundings and everyday moments.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday with extended hours on Thursdays. Guided tours and family programs are regularly offered to help you understand the works on display.
The entrance hall displays the original Robba Fountain, a Baroque sculpture that was relocated from Mestni trg Square in 2006. This striking work is one of Ljubljana's most recognizable artworks and draws visitors in immediately.
