Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is an administrative province in central northeastern Thailand, bordering nine other Thai provinces. The area extends across a wide expanse of forests, fields, and towns, with government offices, universities, and consulates located within.

The first settlement was founded in 1783 when a group led by Rajakruluang established a community that relocated several times. The current provincial capital was established in 1879 at its present location and grew into a regional administrative center.

The region is known for its silk weaving, especially in Chonnabot district, where weavers produce Mudmee silk using traditional methods. Artisans dye the threads before weaving, creating characteristic patterns that are visible in workshops and local markets.

The province is divided into 26 administrative districts, with the capital city of the same name serving as the center. Travelers reach the different districts through a network of roads connecting the larger towns.

Four national parks protect different forested areas and offer hiking trails and viewpoints. Phu Wiang National Park is the site where several dinosaur fossils were discovered, now displayed in a museum on-site.
