Gölbaşı, district in Ankara Province, Turkey
Gölbaşı is a town in Ankara Province located about 20 kilometers south of the capital. It sits next to Mogan Lake and near Eymir Lake, surrounded by forests and green spaces that give the area a peaceful setting.
Settlement in this area dates back over two thousand years, with presence of Hittites, Phrygians, Romans, Byzantines, and later Ottoman rule. The forests here held strategic importance during historical conflicts, notably in 1402 when armies used them for military preparation.
The place takes its name from Gölbaşı, meaning lake head, reflecting its connection to the waters nearby. People here have a strong tradition of gathering in public spaces, enjoying time by the lakes and in green areas as a daily part of community life.
The town is easily accessible by public transport or car from Ankara. It offers many opportunities for walking, cycling, and picnicking by the lakes, with simple restaurants and cafes along the shorelines.
A rare wildflower called Sevgi Çiçeği or Love Flower blooms around Mogan Lake every May, connected to a local legend about two lovers kept apart by their families. Visitors often leave small memorials at the spots where these flowers grow.
