Dominican Church

The Dominican Church is a baroque building with an elliptical dome, paired columns on the facade, and rectangular windows accented by round stained glass. The structure displays typical baroque design with carefully crafted architectural details.

The building was constructed between 1749 and 1764 under architect Jan de Witte, replacing earlier Gothic and wooden churches from the 13th century. Later it served as a Soviet-era museum promoting atheism before returning to religious use.

The church once served as a gathering place for Catholic worshippers before its role shifted over time. Today you can see how different communities have used the space and left their mark on its character.

The church sits east of Market Square and is easy to locate and access from the Old Town. You should know that it maintains regular visiting hours and hosts cultural events alongside its religious services.

Inside there is an alabaster figure that was brought from Kiev and shows a rare connection to eastern artistic traditions. This special piece demonstrates how the church incorporated influences from different regions.
