Gunpowder Tower, Medieval defense tower in Old Town, Lviv, Ukraine
The Gunpowder Tower is a medieval defensive tower in the Old Town of Lviv, Ukraine, built with walls roughly 10 feet (3 meters) thick and fitted with narrow loopholes. These openings are arranged so that defenders inside could cover multiple angles of attack at once.
The tower was built in the mid-16th century using stones taken from a demolished arsenal, and it guarded the eastern entrance to the city. Over time it shifted from an active fortification to a storage space for weapons and military supplies.
The entrance is flanked by two white marble lions brought from Austria, part of a broader tradition of stone lion sculptures spread across the city. Lviv is so closely associated with these figures that locals sometimes call it the city of lions.
The tower is on Pidvalna Street in the heart of the Old Town, easy to reach on foot from most nearby landmarks. The ground floor houses a cafe and a souvenir shop, so it works well as a stop during a walking tour of the area.
The street level around the tower has risen by about 6 feet (2 meters) over the centuries, so the original base of the structure now sits underground. What visitors see today is only the upper section of what was once a considerably taller tower.
