Голубі озера, Lake complex near Lyman, Ukraine.
The Blue Lakes are a group of water bodies near Lyman, surrounded by pine forests alongside the Siverskyi Donets River. The lake complex displays varying characteristics: while one basin continues to function as an active sand quarry, others have developed shorelines lined with reeds and willow trees.
The lakes formed during the 1960s when groundwater filled abandoned quarries previously used for sand extraction by Krasnoliman quarry management. Industrial excavation sites gradually transformed into water-filled basins through this natural process.
The lakes serve as a gathering place for locals who come to fish and spend time in nature throughout the year. The setting creates a simple retreat where people experience the landscape in an unhurried way.
Access to the lakes is straightforward, but visitors should prepare for changing weather and wear suitable footwear, especially near wet ground. The area remains largely undeveloped, so bringing water and provisions is wise, and staying clear of active quarry operations is important for safety.
Underground springs feed the lakes and maintain constant water circulation within them. This natural circulation prevents stagnation and keeps the water clear across all seasons.
