Bristol County, Administrative county in Massachusetts, United States
Bristol County is an administrative division in southeastern Massachusetts with Taunton serving as the seat, covering around 22 municipalities between Narragansett Bay and the New England coast. The territory stretches over flat to gently rolling terrain with forests, fields, and an extensive road network connecting several mid-sized cities and rural towns.
The county was created in 1685 under colonial administration and grew during the 19th-century industrialization through textile production and whaling. Many cities experienced economic transition from the mid-20th century as factories closed and new industries developed.
Towns contain historic centers with buildings dating to the 1700s, while coastal communities maintain active harbors for fishing boats and ferries. Many places carry colonial-era names that trace back to early settlers or indigenous terms.
Most places are easiest to reach by car, as public transit focuses mainly on the larger cities. Visitor centers and information boards in individual towns provide guidance on local attractions and services.
Several towns hold old graveyards from the 1600s with stone markers carved by hand with symbols and names. The area also includes stretches of old postal roads that once linked Boston to the southern colonies.
