West Lafayette, University city in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, United States.
West Lafayette sits on the western bank of the Wabash River and contains residential neighborhoods along with the sprawling Purdue University campus at an elevation of 187 meters. The town spreads across gentle hills that rise from the riverbank westward, crossed by wide streets.
The town formed in 1888 when three settlements—Chauncey, Oakwood and Kingston—merged after developing on higher ground above the Wabash River flood zones. The founding of Purdue University in 1869 shaped the growth of the area, transforming the small communities into an academic center.
The campus brings together young people from many countries who shape a lively town through parks, libraries and sports facilities. On weekends, cafés and restaurants fill with students taking breaks between lectures or meeting after seminars.
Buses run regularly through town operated by the Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Corporation, linking residential areas with university facilities. Walking or cycling works well to explore, as many paths and bike lanes cross the area.
The Purdue Research Park, founded in 1961, houses over 140 technology companies and attracts entrepreneurs and researchers working on new developments. Some buildings in the park are open to visitors and display exhibits about current research projects and innovations.
