Slayter Center of Performing Arts
Slayter Center of Performing Arts, Open-air theatre at Purdue University, West Lafayette, United States.
The Slayter Center is an outdoor amphitheater at Purdue University featuring a concrete canopy suspended by steel cables that shelters a stage about 46 feet deep and 56 feet wide. The natural hillside slope creates seating for approximately 20,000 people, with underground spaces providing rehearsal rooms and storage facilities.
James Slayter, a chemical engineer and prolific inventor, donated funds for the center which opened in 1963. Since its completion, it has served as a cornerstone venue for academic and cultural events at Purdue University.
This outdoor venue serves as a gathering place for the university community, hosting student performances, jazz ensembles, and cultural events throughout the warmer months. It plays a central role in campus life and traditions.
The venue is easy to access and accommodates large crowds, particularly on pleasant weather days during spring, summer, and fall. Visitors should check ahead to learn about upcoming programming and events at the site.
The amphitheater's design draws inspiration from Stonehenge and incorporates yellow French glass and black epoxy-resin walls to enhance acoustics. This unusual material choice creates a distinctive visual and functional experience.
