Hinsdale County, Mountain region in Colorado, United States
Hinsdale County extends across 1,123 square miles at high elevations, with five mountains exceeding 14,000 feet and over twenty peaks above 13,000 feet in altitude.
The county received its name from George A. Hinsdale, a former Lieutenant Governor of Colorado Territory, and was officially established in 1874.
Lake City serves as the only incorporated municipality and county seat, hosting regular meetings of three County Commissioners who oversee local governance.
The territory includes three national forests: Rio Grande, Grand Mesa Uncompahgre & Gunnison, and San Juan, offering extensive hiking and outdoor recreation opportunities.
The Continental Divide crosses through the county at two different points, making it one of the most remote regions in the contiguous United States.
