Windom Peak, Mountain summit in Chicago Basin, La Plata County, United States.
Windom Peak is a mountain summit in the San Juan Mountains of La Plata County, Colorado, reaching about 14,087 feet (4,293 m). It sits inside Chicago Basin, a remote glacially carved bowl ringed by steep granite walls and open rocky slopes near the top.
Windom Peak was named during government survey expeditions in the late 1800s, when teams worked to map Colorado's mountain ranges in detail. Their records helped establish the routes and terrain knowledge that climbers still rely on today.
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad drops climbers at Needleton, the standard starting point for Chicago Basin. From there, most hikers follow a long trail through forest before the terrain opens up above the tree line into bare rock and sky.
The route is generally open from June through September, as snow and ice can make the upper sections difficult outside those months. An early start is a good idea because afternoon storms are common at this elevation and the approach from Needleton is long.
Windom Peak is one of three summits in Chicago Basin all above 14,000 feet (4,267 m), placed close enough together that experienced climbers sometimes complete all three in a single long day. This grouping makes Chicago Basin one of the few places in Colorado where such a combined effort is even realistic.
