Mount Eolus, Mountain summit in La Plata County, US
Description
Mount Eolus is a mountain summit in the San Juan Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado with two distinct peaks. The surrounding terrain includes steep rock faces and high alpine meadows typical of this region.
History
The peak was first documented during the Hayden Survey in 1874 and received its current spelling from the Wheeler Survey in 1878. These early geological expeditions established the foundation for scientific study of the San Juan Range.
Culture
The mountain bears the name of the Greek deity Aeolus, who controlled the winds according to classical mythology.
Practical
The best approach is taking the Durango-Silverton railroad to Needleton Station, followed by hiking to Chicago Basin base camp. Access is most feasible during warmer months when snow and ice do not block the routes.
