Seventh Avenue, Major commercial avenue in Manhattan, United States
Seventh Avenue is a major north-south street running through Manhattan from Greenwich Village in the south to Central Park in the north. It passes through important intersections including Times Square where it crosses Broadway and Penn Station at 34th Street.
The avenue's southern section was extended in 1914, improving traffic flow between central Manhattan and Tribeca. This expansion later helped make the construction of the Subway Line 7 possible.
The stretch between 34th and 39th Streets is known as Fashion Avenue, where clothing makers and shops cluster together and shape the neighborhood's daily rhythm. The name reflects how the garment industry once defined this part of town.
Several subway lines run beneath the street with stations at major intersections throughout its length. These connections make it easy to reach other parts of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs.
When the avenue was extended southward, several historic buildings were demolished, including an 1840 Methodist church that once stood there. This loss illustrates the radical changes that shaped modern Manhattan.
