Camp Peary, Military training facility in York County, Virginia, United States
Camp Peary is a military training facility covering roughly 9,000 acres near Williamsburg. The installation includes training grounds, administrative buildings, and specialized instruction areas for intelligence operations.
The Navy established the installation in 1942 as a training center for Seabees, forcing residents from the towns of Magruder and Bigler's Mill to relocate. During the war, the facility held German prisoners from captured U-boats while maintaining secrecy to protect Allied codebreaking efforts.
The installation preserves Porto Bello, a historic hunting lodge that belonged to Lord Dunmore, the final royal governor of Virginia before American independence.
The installation maintains a 5,000-foot (about 1,500 meters) runway for aircraft operations and requires strict security clearance with mandatory escorts for all visiting personnel. Because of limited public information and restricted access, the facility is not suitable for casual sightseeing.
The facility preserves Porto Bello, a historic hunting lodge that belonged to Lord Dunmore, the final royal governor of Virginia before American independence. Despite the secretive use of the grounds, the building remains as an architectural remnant from the colonial era.
