Merchants Square

Merchants Square is a retail district spanning about 49 acres with over 40 shops and restaurants housed in colonial-style buildings. These establishments line Duke of Gloucester Street in Virginia.

The district was founded in 1927 by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Reverend W. A. R. Goodwin as part of the Colonial Williamsburg restoration project. It developed from a vision to create an authentic colonial-era shopping district.

The district maintains a colonial-era appearance through hidden utilities and modern systems concealed underground. Visitors see only traditional building facades and architectural details that define the streetscape.

The district has multiple public parking areas providing direct access to shops and restaurants throughout the area. A seasonal farmers market operates in various locations within the district.

The district received recognition from the Virginia Landmarks Register in 2005 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. This dual designation highlights its regional historical importance.
