Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, Motorsport racing track in Brownsburg, Indiana.
Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park is a motorsport complex northwest of Indianapolis featuring a 0.686-mile (1.1-kilometer) oval track, a 4,400-foot (1.3-kilometer) drag strip, and a dormant road course. The facility sits roughly 15 miles (24 kilometers) from downtown along U.S. Route 136 and hosts primarily drag racing events throughout the season.
The facility opened in 1960 as a quarter-mile drag strip before adding the oval track one year later. During its early years, the road course also hosted road racing events before that portion of the complex fell out of regular use.
The NHRA U.S. Nationals take place here each year over Labor Day weekend, drawing tens of thousands of racing fans from across the country. During this multi-day event, the grounds transform into a large gathering of the dragster community with paddock areas, vendor booths, and spectator zones along the starting line.
The motorsport complex sits along U.S. Highway 136 west of Brownsburg and is accessible via Interstate 74. Hotels and restaurants can be found in the nearby suburbs of Brownsburg, Avon, and Plainfield, all within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of the track.
Mario Andretti claimed his first Indy car victory on the now-dormant road course in 1961. The road course section still exists but no longer hosts races and has since been reclaimed by vegetation.
