Tornado Alley, Geographic region in the Great Plains, United States

Tornado Alley is a broad region across the Great Plains stretching from northern Texas through Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, where warm moist air from the Gulf meets cold dry air masses from Canada. The flat landscape with no natural barriers allows these opposing currents to mix freely and generate intense convective storms.

Air Force meteorologists coined the term in the early 1950s after analyzing weather records and identifying a recurring pattern of severe tornadoes across the central United States. The area has since become a focal point for storm research, with mobile tracking units regularly following severe weather cells across the plains.

Residents often gather in churches or community centers when storms approach, and neighbors maintain constant contact through radio and mobile alerts. Many families maintain basement shelters stocked with supplies, water, and battery-powered radios as part of daily life in these communities.

Travelers should exercise caution between March and June when tornado activity peaks, and always monitor local weather forecasts and emergency broadcasts. When crossing the region, it helps to know the location of nearby shelters and to keep an emergency kit with flashlight and first aid supplies in the vehicle.

Most tornadoes form in the late afternoon or early evening when temperatures peak and atmospheric conditions favor rotation. Some severe supercell storms can produce multiple tornadoes simultaneously, a rare phenomenon known as a tornado outbreak.
