Gothenburg, city in Nebraska, USA
Gothenburg is a small city in Dawson County, Nebraska, set along the route of the Union Pacific Railroad. Its streets run flat and straight, parallel to the tracks, with a compact downtown of older buildings arranged in a classic grid pattern.
Olof Bergstrom, a Swedish immigrant, founded the city in 1882 and actively recruited other Swedish settlers to join him. That founding community left a lasting mark on the character of the place, starting with the name it still carries today.
The city takes its name from the Swedish city of Gothenburg, reflecting the origins of many of its early settlers. Local events and small public spaces around town still carry traces of that Scandinavian connection that visitors can notice during a stroll.
The city is easy to get around on foot, with flat streets and short distances between the main points of interest. The Pony Express Museum and a sod house replica are among the spots visitors tend to head to first.
Gothenburg in Nebraska and the Swedish city of Gothenburg are the only two cities in the world that share this exact name. That is not a coincidence, since the American city was directly named after the Swedish one by its founder.
