Church of the Holy Innocents
Church of the Holy Innocents, Gothic Revival church in Albany, United States.
The Church of the Holy Innocents is a Gothic Revival structure with a T-shaped floor plan, built from rubble masonry and trimmed with Portland stone. The roof slopes steeply and is covered in slate.
The building was constructed in 1850 according to architect Frank Wills' plans and served as the fifth parish of the city. It originally functioned as an Episcopal congregation's main church.
The interior displays stained glass windows made using traditional medieval techniques that color the light in special ways. These windows strongly shape the visual impression when entering the church.
The building stands at the corner of North Pearl and Colonie Street, about half a mile north of downtown. The location sits in a residential neighborhood that is easy to reach.
After being sold to a Russian Orthodox congregation, the structure was fundamentally changed by adding an onion dome. This change completely replaced the original bell tower form.
