Arbor Hill Historic District–Ten Broeck Triangle, Historic district in Albany, United States.
Arbor Hill Historic District–Ten Broeck Triangle is a residential historic district in Albany, New York, made up of rowhouses, two churches, and the grounds of Ten Broeck Mansion, all spread across several city blocks. The buildings reflect Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian styles, giving the streets a consistent 19th-century character.
The area began to take shape in the late 18th century around the Ten Broeck Mansion, built in 1797 for Abraham Ten Broeck. During the 19th century, the surrounding blocks filled in with rowhouses and churches as wealthy Albany families settled there.
Arbor Hill was once a wealthy enclave and gradually became an African American neighborhood over the course of the 20th century, a shift that is still visible in how people use the streets and care for the buildings today. The area has a strong sense of community identity that shapes its daily rhythm.
The district is easy to walk through at a relaxed pace, and most of the architectural details on the rowhouse facades are visible from the street. The Ten Broeck Mansion and the two churches serve as good reference points when moving through the area.
Some of the abandoned buildings in the district have been sold through public auctions organized by local groups to encourage new owners to take on restoration work. This approach has helped bring several long-empty properties back into use without relying solely on large-scale investment.
