Downtown Torrington Historic District, Historic commercial district in Torrington, Connecticut, US.
Downtown Torrington Historic District is a commercial center with around 71 buildings dating from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, located near where the Naugatuck River flows through town. The structures range from early industrial buildings to more refined designs from the early 20th century.
Development of this area started in 1813 with a mill on the Naugatuck River that became the foundation for later factories. When the railroad arrived in 1849, the area grew rapidly and transformed into a major commercial center.
The Warner Theatre from 1931 remains a focal point where people gathered for performances and social events. The building reflects how entertainment brought the community together across different times.
Walking is the best way to explore the district, with paths connecting the main buildings and information boards at key spots explaining the architecture and history. The layout makes it easy to move between different buildings at your own pace.
Railroad Square contains an 1898 depot building in Renaissance Revival style that marks where industrial and transportation networks once converged. This structure shows how the railway shaped the area's growth and importance.
