White Memorial Foundation, Conservation center in Litchfield, Connecticut, US.

The White Memorial Foundation is a conservation area spanning about 4,000 acres of forests and wetlands around Bantam Lake. It offers more than 35 miles of trails, two camping grounds, a nature museum, and opportunities for kayaking and fishing.

Alain and May White created the foundation in 1913 to protect the landscape from development. This original vision of preserving natural spaces for the future continues to guide how the land is managed today.

The site represents how local communities have long valued this landscape as a place for outdoor recreation and nature study. This connection remains visible today in how people use the trails, beaches, and water for daily leisure.

The trails work well for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, while the lake offers kayaking and fishing. Comfortable clothing and waterproof footwear are useful, especially if you plan to explore less-traveled paths or wetland areas.

The lake and surrounding forests host an impressive array of animal life, from numerous bird species to mammals, reptiles, and fish. This diversity often surprises visitors who expect to see only a quiet forest landscape.
