Milton Center Historic District, Historic district in Litchfield, United States.

Milton Center Historic District is a settlement area along Milton Road featuring churches, school buildings, historic houses, and industrial remains near the Shepaug River. The structures are arranged around a central common where Milton and Shearshop roads meet, following the original layout of the place.

The settlement began around 1740 as West Farms, with David Welch establishing a merchant house in 1756 on the eastern side. These early foundations shaped the area's growth as a local center.

The district is home to two schools and several religious buildings that have long served as gathering places for the community. These structures show how education and faith shaped the daily life of people who lived here.

The area sits at a moderate elevation and is easy to explore since buildings are spread throughout the district. Use the street intersections as landmarks to navigate and discover the different structures in an organized way.

Below the surface lie archaeological remains of water-powered mills and sawmills along the Shepaug River branches. These hidden traces reveal how important water resources were to the economic life of this place.
