Milton Center Historic District

Milton Center Historic District stretches along Milton Road, featuring churches, schools, historic houses, and industrial remnants near the Shepaug River.

The settlement originated around 1740 as West Farms, with David Welch establishing a merchant house in 1756 near the eastern village section.

The district contains two educational institutions, Milton Academy and Milton District School, along with religious buildings that served the community since 1791.

The district maintains its original layout at 327 meters elevation, with structures arranged around a central common at the intersection of Milton and Shearshop roads.

Archaeological remains of water-powered industries, including sawmills and gristmills, demonstrate the area's industrial heritage along the Shepaug River branches.
