Elk River, River system in central West Virginia, United States

Elk River is a river system in central West Virginia that flows 172 miles from Pocahontas County through the Allegheny Mountains. It ends where it meets the Kanawha River near Charleston, passing through several counties along the way.

The river gets its name from the elk herds that once lived along its banks in large numbers. Native American groups gave it descriptive names in their languages before European settlement changed the landscape and populations.

Local people have always valued this river for fishing, finding both coldwater trout and warmwater species within its waters. These fishing traditions remain part of how residents connect with the landscape today.

This river supplies drinking water to communities across central and southwestern West Virginia through an extensive pipeline system. The water level changes with the seasons, which affects fishing conditions and how easy it is to access different sections.

A section called The Dries features the river flowing underground through caverns for 5 miles before it reappears in its original riverbed. This hidden geological feature is often missed by casual visitors but makes the river particularly interesting to explore.
