Duida-Marahuaca National Park

Duida-Marahuaca National Park, National park in Amazonas state, Venezuela.

Description

Duida-Marahuaca National Park protects two massive table-top mountains with sheer rock walls that rise 2,700 and 2,900 meters above the rainforest. The protected area includes thickening vegetation on the slopes and major river systems that cut through the terrain and shape its character.

History

The park was established in 1978 under President Carlos Andrés Pérez as a protected area to preserve the entire region and its unique landforms. This decision recognized the scientific and ecological value of these isolated mountains.

Culture

The Pemon and Yanomami peoples have lived here for generations, and their presence shapes daily life throughout the park. You can observe how they interact with the landscape and practice traditional skills like hunting and fishing in the rivers.

Practical

Visitors typically reach the area by river via the Orinoco, Padamo, or Cunucunuma, with landing sites at Esmeralda and Culebra for access. Travel is best during the dry season when river conditions are more stable and navigation is easier.

Did you know?

The table-top mountains in the park harbor more than one-fifth of their plant species found nowhere else on Earth, having evolved in this isolated high elevation. These endemic organisms make the place of great interest to botanists and scientists.
