Hintere Bachofenspitze, Mountain summit in Karwendel range, Tyrol, Austria
Hintere Bachofenspitze is a mountain summit in the Karwendel range rising to 2,668 meters (8,753 feet). The peak has steep rock faces on its northern side and more moderate southern slopes that offer various climbing approaches.
The summit received a cross installed in October 2003 by climbers Franz Brunner and Fritz Gostner, marking improved accessibility for mountaineers. This installation became a significant point for those making the ascent.
The mountain serves as the northernmost point of Thaur municipality's territory, connecting the Gleirsch chain in the west to the Halltal chain in the east.
The climb starts from Pfeishütte mountain hut at 1,922 meters (6,305 feet), with marked routes through Sonntagkar valley. Certain sections demand basic rock climbing ability and solid fitness levels.
The northern rock wall drops steeply for about 700 meters (2,296 feet) down to Kleiner Gschnierkopf, forming a striking vertical formation. This dramatic terrain structure dominates the appearance of the Karwendel range at this location.
