Krimmler Tauernhaus, Mountain hut at 1622 meters in Krimmler Achental, Austria.
Krimmler Tauernhaus is a mountain hut in the Krimmler Achental valley in Austria, sitting at around 1622 meters above sea level. It offers guest rooms and dormitories, along with a sauna and infrared cabin for overnight guests.
The hut appears in records from around 1389, when it served as a resting stop for merchants and pilgrims crossing the mountain passes between Austria and Italy. Over the following centuries it remained a key stopping point along this alpine route.
The hut sits along an old crossing route over the Alps that travelers have used for centuries, giving the place a strong sense of passage and transit. Inside, guests can try traditional Austrian mountain food made from regional recipes.
The hut is open from May through October and from December through April, so checking ahead is a good idea before setting out. Weather at this elevation can shift quickly, so solid footwear and warm layers are worth bringing regardless of the forecast.
After World War II, thousands of Jewish refugees passed through here on their way to Palestine, using the old alpine crossing as part of an organized escape network known as Bricha. This chapter of the hut's history is rarely mentioned on the trail but is documented by historians.
