Hochlecken-Großhöhle, Natural monument cave in Altmünster, Austria
Hochlecken-Großhöhle is an extensive cave system in the Alpine limestone of Upper Austria, featuring multiple levels connected by passages and vertical shafts. The underground chambers display formations typical of karst caves, where water has shaped the rock over thousands of years.
Local climbers first explored this cave system in the 1920s, drawn by curiosity about the underground landscape. Systematic surveys were later carried out to map the passages and understand its scale, eventually leading to official protection.
The cave network holds geological records that scientists and researchers regularly study to understand the formation processes of karst landscapes in Upper Austria.
Visiting requires experience and special equipment, as entry is permitted only with authorization and expert guidance. The demanding nature of this location means that unprepared visitors should not attempt to enter.
A notable shaft called Stierwascher displays one of the steepest vertical descents found in cave systems, with unusually spacious chambers. This feature draws cave researchers interested in understanding vertical exploration at extreme depths.
