Brunnkogel, Mountain summit in Höllengebirge range, Austria

Brunnkogel is a 1708 m summit in the Höllengebirge, on the municipal boundary between Altmünster and Ebensee. Its 14 m high and 7 m wide summit cross, erected in September 1970, is dedicated to the fallen and returning soldiers of the Aurachtal and depicts nine trades, among them doctor, blacksmith, carpenter and farmer.

A first wooden summit cross was erected in the 1950s and was split and destroyed by a lightning strike in 1969. The current cross, 14 m high and 7 m wide, was set up in September 1970 and is dedicated to the fallen and returning soldiers of the Aurach valley. After heavy snow bent it in winter 2012/13, a replica with improved statics was built by a HTL Vöcklabruck teacher and his students and installed in June 2013.

The peak's earlier name, Spielberg, came from the Spielhahn, the local word for the black grouse. A fire in the summit area gave rise to the name Brenta, from brennen (to burn), which later became Brunnkogel. The old name survives on the northern forepeak, the Hoher Spielberg (1584 m), which dominates the view of the east wall from the Langbath lakes.

The shortest marked ascent starts at the Taferlklause and leads through the Aurachkar to the Hochleckenkogel and on to the summit, about 2½ hours. A longer route from the Taferlklause goes first to the Hochleckenhaus and then east across the plateau, about 3 hours. The most demanding marked route begins at the Vorderer Langbathsee and crosses the Schafluckensteig, a former alpine pasture path with cable-secured passages that require a head for heights.

Snow load bent the cross in winter 2012/13; a replica with stronger statics, built by HTL Vöcklabruck teacher J. Treml and his students, was raised in June 2013.
