Mostarsko blato, Seasonal wetland between mountains in Hercegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mostarsko blato is a seasonal wetland in Hercegovina that sits between surrounding mountains and mountain ranges. The area forms a low-lying basin where water collects during wetter months, creating pools and muddy meadows across the valley floor.
The land was once intensively farmed for tobacco, corn, and wheat before transitioning to pasture and grazing grounds over time. Medieval fortifications and Ottoman-era structures still stand in the region, marking centuries of settlement and use.
The name Mostarsko blato means swamp in the local language and reflects the character of this land. Visitors can see traditional stone paths and buildings that show how people have adapted to living in this seasonal waterscape.
The best time to visit is during the drier months from June to September when the ground is firmer and easier to walk across. In wetter months from October onward, parts of the area flood and become muddy, so sturdy footwear and extra time for movement are necessary.
The area is a major stopover point for over 180 bird species, particularly during spring and fall migrations along the Adriatic route. Visitors can spot large groups of Bee-eaters and Sand Martins resting here before continuing their journeys.
