Gol Talab, Historic water tank in Islampur, Old Dhaka, Bangladesh

Gol Talab is a large oval water tank situated in Old Dhaka near Ahsan Manzil Palace, with banks and a bathing ghat on its northwestern side. The body of water appears green and busy with daily use, surrounded by buildings and local pathways.

This water tank was created in 1886 by Nawab Abdul Bari to provide fresh water to Old Dhaka residents. Over the following generations, it remained a crucial resource for the growing community in this area.

Local people use this place daily for bathing, washing, and relaxing on the banks, making it a social hub for the neighborhood. The community gathers here regularly, especially in the mornings and evenings when the activity is most visible.

The site is easily accessible during daytime hours and offers a designated bathing area on the northwestern side where visitors can enter for a fee. Plan to visit in the morning or late afternoon when the activity is lighter and the water is calmer.

The water tank supports several fish species including rohu, tilapia, and silver carp that many visitors fail to notice while observing the social activity. The water also hosts dragonflies, beetles, and water scorpions that can be spotted if you look closely at the surface.
