Bahadur Shah Park, Historical park in Old Dhaka, Bangladesh
Bahadur Shah Park is an oval-shaped green space in Old Dhaka featuring iron railings, two gates positioned on the east and west sides, and paved pathways circling the perimeter. The grounds encompass several connecting roads that provide access from different directions.
The site functioned as a billiards club for the Armenian community in the mid-18th century and underwent dramatic change during the upheavals of 1857. The park's current name honors a historical figure from the early 20th century.
The park has long served as a gathering place for different communities in the city, and its layout reflects a blend of local and colonial influences. The monuments placed here tell stories of the people who shaped this location.
The grounds are accessible daily from early morning until late evening at no charge, with multiple entry routes through the surrounding old city. Early mornings offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring.
The obelisk within the park was built to commemorate the son of a prominent family and remains a rare example of British memorial architecture in Bengal. This monument is easy to overlook but shapes how one understands the location's colonial past.
