Lepenitsa cave

Lepenitsa Cave extends across three distinct levels with a total length of 1525 meters, featuring an underground river and four interior lakes.

Scientific exploration of the cave began in 1925 when zoologist Ivan Buresh, director of the Royal Museum of Natural History, conducted initial research expeditions.

Local residents of Rakitovo established the first branch of the Bulgarian Cave Society in 1930 to investigate Lepenitsa and neighboring cave systems.

The cave entrance requires traveling 11 kilometers on asphalt road from Rakitovo, followed by 6 kilometers of mixed terrain and a walking trail.

Twenty-four animal species inhabit the cave environment, including six troglobionts that have adapted to live exclusively in complete darkness.
