Hisarya Fortress

Hisarya Fortress is a medieval stronghold perched on a hilltop above the Osam River near Lovech, featuring remnants of stone walls and defensive towers. The ruins reveal the layout of what was once a densely fortified settlement designed to control the surrounding territory.

The fortress was built during the Second Bulgarian Empire and served as a defensive stronghold against Byzantine pressures in the region. Over time it declined in importance as political boundaries shifted and new power centers emerged elsewhere.

The fortress maintains its position as a center for historical education, featuring regular guided tours that explain medieval Bulgarian military architecture and defense strategies.

You can reach the fortress by following marked trails from Lovech's center, with signs pointing toward the hilltop site. The climb is relatively short but involves some uphill walking on natural terrain.

The fortress walls incorporate specific architectural elements that demonstrate the evolution of military construction techniques from Roman times through the medieval period.
