Fish Lake, Glacial lake in Rila Mountains, Bulgaria
Fish Lake is a glacial lake located at 2,184 meters (7,165 feet) elevation in the Rila Mountains as part of the Seven Lakes circuit. The water is remarkably clear and the lake covers several hectares with a shallow depth that distinguishes it from neighboring waters.
This lake formed through glacial processes during the last ice age, with massive ice sheets carving into the mountain landscape. The depression created by these ancient glaciers gradually filled with water over time.
The lodge at the northeastern shore serves as a meeting point where hikers and mountain enthusiasts gather during their visit. It creates a natural focal point for people exploring the high-altitude landscape.
A chairlift from the base station brings visitors to the starting point, where a trail connects all seven lakes in sequence. Proper hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing are essential due to the high altitude and changing mountain conditions.
This lake is the shallowest among all seven lakes in the complex, with a maximum depth of only about 2.5 meters. This characteristic means its water warms faster during summer and freezes earlier in autumn than neighboring lakes.
