Navia, municipality (concejo) in Asturias, Spain
Navia is an administrative council in the western part of Asturias, a region on the Atlantic coast of northern Spain. The territory runs from the coastline inland through river valleys and wooded hillsides, covering both small seaside towns and scattered rural villages.
The area around Navia was settled long before Roman times, and the river made it a natural route for trade and movement inland. During the Middle Ages, it was reorganized under the kingdoms of northern Spain and gradually took shape as the administrative territory it is today.
The name Navia is shared with the river that runs through the territory and gives it much of its identity. Along its banks, small fishing villages and farming communities follow a pace of life closely tied to the water and the land.
Spring and early summer tend to offer the most comfortable conditions for getting around, as Atlantic weather can be wet and grey outside those months. A car is the most practical way to move between the coastal and inland parts of the area, since public transport connections between villages are limited.
The Navia River is one of the few rivers in Spain that still supports a notable salmon population, which makes the area well known among fishing communities across the country. This tradition of salmon fishing has been alive here for centuries and remains a real part of local identity.
