Montblanc, Medieval municipality in Conca de Barberà, Spain
Montblanc is a medieval municipality in the Conca de Barberà region of Catalonia surrounded by approximately 1500 meters of fortified walls with 31 towers and five gates. Narrow streets wind past Gothic buildings contained entirely within these protective ramparts.
The town was founded in 1155 and emerged as a strategic settlement where Muslims, Christians, and Jews initially coexisted peacefully in medieval times. Religious tensions later divided the community and reshaped its social structure.
The Gothic church of Santa Maria la Major houses a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary and anchors the town's religious traditions. It stands at the heart of local celebrations and remains the spiritual center where people gather for important festivals.
Visit outside peak season when streets are less crowded and the medieval layout is easier to explore on foot at your own pace. The terrain is mostly level throughout the town center, though some sections have steep passages that require careful footing.
Each April the Medieval Week festival brings the legend of Sant Jordi to life through performances and activities held within the fortified walls. The event fills streets with traditional costumes and recreates crafts and scenes from centuries past.
