Santa Bárbara Castle

Santa Bárbara Castle rises on Mount Guanapay with a diamond-shaped layout and two defensive towers that dominate the surrounding Lanzarote landscape. The fortress design follows military principles of the period, with stone walls and elevated positioning to provide wide views of the territory below.

The fortress was built during the first half of the 16th century under Sancho de Herrera as a strategic watchtower against pirate attacks. It became a key part of the island's defensive system against maritime threats during this era.

The fortress contains a museum devoted to piracy, displaying artifacts and documents that illustrate maritime conflicts that affected the Canary Islands. Visitors today can walk through these collections and understand how crucial defense against sea raiders was for the island's survival.

Reaching the fortress involves a walk up the mountain, which requires moderate physical effort and sturdy footwear. Visitors should bring water and sun protection, as the exposed position offers little shelter from the elements.

An underground tunnel connects the fortress to Teguise town, serving historically as an escape route during pirate raids. This hidden passage reveals how the local population protected itself and linked the military stronghold to daily life below.
