Cala Galdana, Coastal village in Ferreries, Menorca, Spain.

Cala Galdana is a coastal village on the southern shore of Menorca featuring a crescent-shaped bay enclosed by limestone cliffs and wooded valleys, with a sandy beach extending along calm turquoise waters suitable for swimming and water sports.

The village remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s when tourism began transforming it from a quiet spot favored by local fishermen into a resort destination, with its name derived from the Moorish term meaning The Valley of Saint Anne.

The village reflects traditional Balearic lifestyle through its Mediterranean architecture of whitewashed buildings, local cuisine featuring fresh seafood, and festivals that celebrate Menorcan maritime heritage and island customs throughout the summer months.

The village is located about 23 miles (37 kilometers) from Menorca Airport with transfer times of approximately 45 minutes, offering restaurants, shops, beach equipment rentals, and organized boat excursions that explore nearby coves and coastline.

The Algendar River flows into the sea at the village, creating a natural freshwater outlet at the beach where visitors can explore surrounding valleys with historical sites including ancient castle ruins and traditional settlements.

Menorca beaches from red to white sand

Menorca offers varied coastal landscapes from long sand stretches like Son Bou to small coves like Cala Mitjana. Northern beaches present red sand at Cavalleria, while southern ones display white sand at Macarella. Some beaches provide full services, while others maintain their natural state.

The Unmissable Sites of Menorca

The beaches of Menorca are known for their turquoise waters and fine sand. The coast alternates between natural coves and long stretches of sand. Access to these natural sites can be difficult, but the reward is worth the effort! The island, full of curiosities, offers opportunities to explore historic ports, coastal paths, seaside villages, and magnificent natural sites.

Beaches of Spain: Mediterranean, Atlantic coastlines and Balearic and Canary Islands

Spain has more than 8,000 kilometers of coastlines home to hundreds of beaches with diverse characteristics. The Mediterranean, Atlantic, Balearic Islands, and Canary Islands feature contrasting marine scenery: coves sheltered between cliffs, extensive sandy areas, urban beaches, and protected natural zones. Each coastal region has developed its own identity influenced by local geology and climate. The Balearic Islands include bays like Cala Macarella in Menorca or Ses Illetes in Formentera, where white sand contrasts with clear Mediterranean waters. The Canary Islands display volcanic landscapes, with the Maspalomas dunes on Gran Canaria stretching over 6 kilometers, or Lanzarote’s red cliffs framing Playa del Papagayo. Along the Andalusian coast, the Cabo de Gata Natural Park houses Mónsul Beach with its black volcanic formations, while Bolonia near Tarifa features a 4-kilometer-long beach with Roman remains. The northern coast presents a different scene: La Concha urban beach in San Sebastián forms a 1.5-kilometer arc, the limestone cliffs of Asturias protect Playa del Silencio, and the Cíes Islands in Galicia are part of a marine national park.
