Papagayo Beach, White sand beach in Yaiza, Spain.
Papagayo Beach comprises seven separate coastal sections along southern Lanzarote's shoreline, each offering sand stretches of varying widths. The areas are naturally divided by rocky outcrops that rise from the seabed and extend onto the land.
The name comes from a local fish species that inhabits these waters and was known to early inhabitants of the island. The coastal area around it played a role in the island's earliest human settlement and development.
The beach serves as a swimming and sunbathing destination where locals and visitors find calm waters in the sheltered coves. The rocky outcrops between sandy sections create natural boundaries that divide the coastline into distinct areas.
Access is via an unpaved road suitable for vehicles, or on foot and by bicycle from nearby towns. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since parts of the route cross rocky and uneven ground.
The location served as a filming site for a well-known science fiction movie from the 20th century shot with international actors. This film connection brought international attention to the place and continues to draw curious visitors today.
