Museo Atlántico de Lanzarote

Museo Atlántico de Lanzarote, Underwater sculpture museum off Playa Blanca, Spain.

Description

The Museo Atlántico is an underwater art museum off the coast of Lanzarote, displaying about 300 life-size figures positioned at approximately 12 meters (40 feet) depth. The sculptures are located in clear water and can only be explored by diving.

History

The museum opened in 2016 as the first underwater art installation of its kind in Europe. It was established through collaboration between local authorities and international artists to create a new format for contemporary art.

Culture

The artworks are created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor and explore themes of environmental protection and humanity's relationship with nature. Visitors experience these messages firsthand while swimming among the submerged figures.

Practical

Visitors need a diving certification to see the sculptures, or can join a multi-hour beginner course to access the site. The water is clear and conditions are usually favorable, but proper training is essential.

Did you know?

The concrete works are designed to be pH-neutral and function as artificial reefs, attracting marine species such as angel sharks, barracudas, and octopuses. When exploring, you can observe how the sculptures gradually become part of the ocean ecosystem.
