Los Hervideros, Lava field on the western coast of Yaiza, Spain

Los Hervideros is a lava field on the western coast of Yaiza featuring black volcanic cliffs that stretch along the shoreline and form a network of caves and tunnels. These structures resulted from the continuous interaction of solidified lava flows and the forces of the Atlantic Ocean.

The area was formed by the Timanfaya volcanic eruptions in the 1730s, which produced massive lava flows that solidified when they reached the Atlantic. This eruption episode shaped the current coastal topography and created the striking black rock formations still visible today.

Fishermen from the area have long relied on the natural cavities here as lookout spots to assess ocean conditions and locate fishing grounds. This practical relationship with the landscape remains part of how locals understand and use this rugged coastline.

A network of paved pathways and viewing platforms allows visitors to safely observe the power of waves crashing against the rock formations. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the black volcanic stone is sharp and uneven, and the paths follow the natural terrain.

Ocean waves force water through the volcanic rock cavities, creating powerful sprays that shoot upward like natural geysers from the surface. This spectacle is especially dramatic during rough seas and demonstrates the raw power of the ocean working against solid stone.
