Castillo de las Coloradas, Coastal fortification in Playa Blanca, Yaiza, Spain
Castillo de las Coloradas is a circular coastal fortification at Playa Blanca with a diameter of around 56 feet (17 meters). The structure houses military quarters, a dungeon, and a wooden drawbridge that provides access to the interior.
Construction began in 1741 under engineer Claudio de L'Isle with the goal of protecting the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura from pirate raids. It was one of several defensive installations built during this period across the Canary Islands.
The fortification displays 18th-century Spanish military architecture with its distinctive stone construction, corner towers, and bell tower topped by a cross. It was part of a defensive system designed to protect the island's residents from external threats.
The fortress is currently closed to visitors, but the Yaiza City Council is working on plans to establish a navigation and history museum. Check ahead about the current status and any possible guided tours before planning your visit.
The fort stands on a promontory overlooking the Bocaina Strait and was part of a network of watchtowers spread across multiple Canary Islands. This positioning allowed lookouts to spot approaching vessels from considerable distances away.
