Santa María La Antigua, Gothic church in central Valladolid, Spain

Santa María La Antigua is a Gothic church in central Valladolid featuring three naves covered by Gothic ribbed vaults from the 14th century. A distinctive Romanesque tower topped with a pyramidal spire rises above the rest of the structure.

The original church was founded in 1095 by Count Pedro Ansúrez, though the current structure dates mainly from the 12th century with later Gothic modifications. This progression shows how the building adapted to changing architectural styles over generations.

The interior combines Romanesque and Gothic styles, showing how religious buildings in medieval Castile changed their artistic approach over time.

The church sits in Plaza de Portugalete and welcomes visitors throughout the week during regular service times. Plan for a calm walk through the interior, keeping in mind that access may vary depending on religious ceremonies taking place.

In the 16th century, the building needed major structural repairs by architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón because the original construction had serious problems. These repairs prevented collapse and shaped much of how the building appears today.
