Chapel of Obispo de Madrid, Gothic chapel in Plaza de la Paja, Madrid, Spain
The Chapel of Obispo de Madrid is located on Plaza de la Paja and combines Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. It features ornate doors created by Francisco Giralte and interior wooden doors by Francisco de Villapandó that showcase skilled craftsmanship.
Francisco de Vargas started construction between 1520 and 1535, and his son Gutierres Vargas, Bishop of Plasencia, finished the work. The chapel thus grew from the efforts of both a patron and his successor during a period of architectural change.
The chapel displays a blend of Gothic and Renaissance forms that reflects the mature Isabelline style of the period. This architectural mix was common in Madrid at the time and shapes how the building looks and feels today.
The chapel sits in the heart of the historic La Latina neighborhood and is easily reached by metro or bus. The plaza itself is walkable and offers several ways to navigate the surrounding area.
Inside, the tombs of Francisco de Vargas and Inés de Carvajal flank the Plateresque-style High Altar. These burials show the deep connection between the family and the building, which took multiple generations to complete.
