Iglesia de San Pedro el Real, Catholic church in La Latina, Madrid, Spain.
Iglesia de San Pedro el Real is a church in La Latina with a prominent Mudejar brick tower from the 14th century and a renovated front from 1525. The building combines different architectural layers and sits near Calle del Nuncio in the heart of the historic neighborhood.
The building was first mentioned in a law document from 1202 and was built on the site of a former mosque. King Alfonso XI had it rebuilt after capturing Algeciras, shaping the religious history of the neighborhood.
Inside the church you can see religious artworks, including a representation of Jesus the Poor made by a Sevillian artist in the late 18th century. These works reflect how the place has served as a spiritual center for the neighborhood over centuries.
Visitors can see the building during daytime hours, with opening times varying by season, so it's worth checking ahead. The location is easily accessible in a lively neighborhood and suits a visit between exploring other sites.
Inside is a chapel connected to medieval stories, along with an old bell to which local tradition attributes special properties. These details give the place a particular mystique that goes beyond ordinary religious use.
