The church, mentioned in the 1202 Code of Laws, stands on the former site of a mosque and was rebuilt by King Alfonso XI after capturing Algeciras.
Inside the temple resides the statue of Jesus the Poor, created by Juan de Astorga in Seville during the late 18th century.
The church opens Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 12:30 PM and 5 PM to 8 PM, with modified summer hours and reduced Sunday schedule.
The church contains the Chapel of Christ of the Rains, connected to medieval tales, and a bell believed to possess weather-altering properties.
